San Carlos Park is a community geographically positioned between Fort Myers and Estero in the southern recesses of Lee County. The community got its start with thanks to Jules and Jack Freeman, two entrepreneurs whose credits include assisting in the founding of World Airways (America’s first provider of non-scheduled, coast-to-coast, air service) and American Agronomics, a company that significantly bolstered Southwest Florida’s prominence in the citrus industry. In 1953, the Freeman Brothers acquired some 200 acres for $9,000 in what is now known as San Carlos Park. Their idea was to establish a residential area of affordable homes to meet the needs of the working class community. That investment in 200 acres ultimately helped spur the creation of a community that now encompasses more than 2,000 acres. Though San Carlos Park has very much changed over the years, it has remained a valuable source of affordable homes. As this is by-and-large a non-gated area, residents do not encounter the typical Home Owner Association fees exacted by other communities.

Historically, San Carlos Park gained notoriety after local prospectors discovered an artesian well of hot mineral water. Despite its pungent sulphur aroma, visitors from around the world once came to soak within a pool of its water believing it helps alleviate psoriasis and other inflammatory conditions. The spring can be found among the grounds of the Days Inn Springs Resort.

As San Carlos Park is positioned at the head of an Estero Bay tributary known as Mullock Creek, it has long held appeal with area fisherman. The backwaters here rival that of anywhere when it comes to landing snook and redfish.

These waters are also an excellent place to kayak or canoe. Along the journey to the bay and Gulf, one can anticipate encounters with the variety of avian species which flock to the
